Although India has a long tradition in Ayurvedic and herbal medicines, we have not been successful as an effective player in the international market for want of rigorous testing and certification procedures. Also the imbalance in demand and supply of raw materials has lead to the use of substitutes which quite often fail to produce desired results. Also, lack of adequate clinical trials has lead to the non acceptability of the products among scientifically literate class.
Taking serious note of these facts, it was a timely initiative of a set of progressive Ayurvedic entrepreneurs to form a consortium in collaboration with the Kerala State Government initiative KINFRA.

Ayurveda literally means the 'science (Veda) of longevity'; because of its divine origins it is called the 'Medicine of the Gods'. It had its beginning in the sixth century BC. Although initially practiced by the Hindu Community, it was subsequently adapted by the Buddhists and other religious groups. It is now undergoing a renaissance both in India and the Western world, where it is seen as a necessary compliment to the Clinical model.Ayurveda could replace earlier notions on disease and healing that were written down in religious texts such as Atharva Veda that attributed diseases and their healing to demonic disease entities. The term 'Ayurveda' is derived from two Sanskrit words 'Ayus' meaning life and 'Veda', meaning Science or knowledge. |

A study on Ayurvedic segment done in 2003, by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) for the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS) of the Government of India, revealed that the Ayurvedic industry in Kerala accounts for only Rs. 200 crores (Rs. 2000 million) which accounts for only 5% of the national turn over in the industry. This is irrespective of the fact that our rich heritage in Ayurveda stretches back over 5000 years and that the State has over 200 GMP certified Ayurvedic product manufacturers. |
